Allspice or spice or clove pepper, also known as Jamaican pepper, spicy pepper.
It is a very aromatic berry of the Jamaican black locust tree. The berries are picked before they are fully ripe and dried to preserve their flavour. The grains are rich in the essential oil eugenol, which gives the pepper its strong aroma. Eugenol is used, for example, to make vanillin.
The taste is reminiscent of a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
In the old days, spices were widely used to flavour chocolate. You shouldn't add too much to foods, otherwise it will overshadow the other flavours.
Good for marinades (e.g. classic marinated pumpkin salad), roasted meats, wild game meats, sauces, ketchup, seasoning mixes, etc. In America, it is widely used in desserts (e.g. pumpkin pie), while in Jamaica it is used to make a famous liqueur called Pimento Dram.
