Vanilla originated in tropical Central America, specifically in the jungles of Mexico, where it is still cultivated in large quantities. The Maya were already cultivating vanilla, and the Spanish explorer Cortés was the first European in the 16th century to whom the Aztecs offered their special cocoa drink, spiced with vanilla among other ingredients. Today, vanilla is also cultivated in Tahiti, Uganda, Madagascar, La Réunion, Mauritius, the Seychelles and the Comoros, as well as in Sri Lanka and Java.
